“As a part of the remote Help Desk support team, I enjoy the daily challenge of troubleshooting our client's technical issues and searching for the right solution every day.”
We sat down with James Heerden, an AMT systems engineer, to pick his brain and find out more about this hard-working team player.
What is your full name?
J.M.S van Heerden, but everyone calls me James
Where do you live?
I was born and raised in a town called Kroonstad in the Free State, South Africa but in 2011, I moved to Bloemfontein, which is the capital of the Free State, the city of roses.
How did you first become interested in technology?
My first encounter was at the age of 6 when my dad bought his first computer, a 386 DX if memory serves. It was still operating with a Floppy drive, and I remember till this day, ALWAYS close the “gate” before you remove the floppy from the drive otherwise you will clear the disc. My first real Windows OS was Win 95 and before that Win 3.1. from then on, I was hooked!
Why do you love technology today?
Apart from the fact that the entire world revolves around technology, there are no more borders. It would take days even months to send a letter to family or friends, now it is a single press of a button, and you can send a message across multiple technology platforms.
What’s your favorite activity when you are not working?
First of all, I love playing with my energetic little boy, Lucah.
I also read, a lot.
Can you tell us about your family?
I am married to my beautiful wife of 6 years Lezahn. We have a 2-year-old little boy. We do not have any pets, but occasionally me and my boy go to bed with a stuffed dinosaur.
Besides AMT (of course) what was your most favorite job?
I was fortunate to work in multiple sectors of the IT industry. From servicing large AIO (All in one) network printers and copiers, to maintaining a college network infrastructure and at an ISP. My favorite part was at the college. As new courses started, we had to update all the labs and keep up to date with new technologies.
What’s the one thing you cannot live without?
I cannot live without my family. The quote comes to mind: “When days are dark, friends are few, but family will carry you through the storm.”
That reminds me of two of my favorite quotes by Albert Einstein that I think about almost daily and take to heart:
