Corné van Deventer Joins AMT Help Desk Team

Corné is part of the AMT Help Desk team which provides our customers with professional and immediate help desk support.

“My focus is on troubleshooting and resolving technical issues that affect business productivity so clients can quickly get back to work.”

We are so happy to have Corné as an integral part of our team, we sat down with him to ask a few questions so we can better understand what he’s all about.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? 

I was born and raised in a town called Kroontad (directly translated as Crowntown) in the Free State, South Africa. I attended Afrikaans High School and matriculated in 1999. In 2006 I moved to Bloemfontein, which is the capital of the Free State.

How did you first become interested in technology?  

From a young age playing with my parent’s old 386 with a monochrome screen to my very first computer which had 32MB of memory and Windows 98, I’ve always been interested in technology and what could be achieved.

Why do you love technology today?  

I love technology because of the amazing ways that it helps people, if you look at the medical field, specialists performing operations remotely from halfway around the world thanks to technology. The ability to stay in contact with a friend or loved one via Teams/Facebook or whatever application you use. With smartphones, information is literally at your fingertips, if you want to know something you can simply take your phone and Google. During the pandemic, thanks to technology lots of people were able to work from home and keep their jobs while businesses were able to continue, whereas without technology these businesses would have been forced to close and lots of employees would have lost their jobs.

What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do after work?

I love sports, watching and playing. I used to play tennis three to four times a week. These days I spend most of my time keeping my two daughters out of each other’s hair. I also enjoy watching a nice movie with my family.

Tell us a little bit about your family.

I got married in 2014 to the most amazing wife (Christa) and we have two beautiful daughters (Chrisne & Carlize). Me and my wife actually met playing at the same Tennis Club. We also have three dogs Laika (named after the first dog in space), Brandy (my favorite drink) and Spikkels (Speckles in English – but she has none).

Why do you enjoy working in IT? 

I’ve always been in the IT industry, and I’ve been doing this for 22 years. Each job or project is a bit unique in its own way. Every day is interesting as no two days are the same.

 What’s the one thing you can’t live without?  

Besides the obvious people, I can’t live without which would be my wife and children the thing I can’t live without would most probably be my cell phone, Internet connection, and a shower.

What are your primary duties at AMT and what is your favorite aspect of the job? 

My primary duty is on the Help Desk. My favorite aspect of the job thus far has been to see how Americans respond to my accent.

Do you have a favorite book, movie or product?

  1. My favorite movie it without a doubt Poolhall Junkies. I firmly believe that anything you need to learn about life you can learn from this movie.
  2.  I’m not a big reader but if I had to read something it would be written by Spike Milligan.
  3.  My favorite current IT product would be the “Out of Office” function.
