Iot and your Business

You may have heard about the Internet of Things (IoT), and chances are your business is already connected to it in some way?

Everyday thousands of things are being connected to the Internet for all sorts of purposes, including door locks, thermostats, temperature sensors, lighting systems, security cameras, baby monitors and appliances just to name a few. We take these conveniences for granted but they are very much a part of the Internet of Things.

The IoT has vast uses in commercial and business applications such as lodging, restaurants, stores, and healthcare. Personal medical devices can tell your healthcare provider the status of health indicators such as heart rate or blood pressure. It can be used for environmental monitoring, lighting, HVAC, and security at hotel properties to make guests feel more secure and comfortable.

However, with all of its benefits, the IoT presents a multitude of significant new security issues that didn’t exist before the internet came along. The reality is, every commercial business and NPO is being pulled into the IoT, and they must be prepared.

Securing the IoT

The IoT presents a number of new security challenges, due to its very nature and structure. For example, the IoT is primarily a wireless technology, which by definition is more vulnerable to hacking and intrusion. Earlier versions of the IoT relied on telephone lines and hard-wire technology that required some manner of physical intervention. With the wireless revolution, it is important for every business to honestly evaluate their vulnerabilities as a result of this technology shift. Everyone in the business, from IT management to line operations needs to work together to ensure the organization is addressing all types of security issues.

Many Managed Service Providers are fluent and knowledgeable in IoT and have the expertise to evaluate your organization’s security stance in relation to the IoT.
